Hurray for Measure Q

ohh shiny
WOOT! The Oakland Public Library is finally upgrading its online catalog and servers.

Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but the system definitely seemed faster when I put a book on hold just now...

Just six years in, a new millennium system!

Hey, it's Oakland, after all — I mean, we've only managed to shoot ourselves in the foot two or three times over the library so far. Just think how many opportunities to screw it up we still have!

"...we've only managed to shoot ourselves in the foot two or three times..."

Yup, sounds like Oakland. (ducks for cover)

From the link: "The current online catalog is now over 16 years old and is no longer supported by its vendor."

Really? No kidding? One could hardly tell.

"Faster" is certainly a goal they can meet. Forcing people to download a 10M file with a complete list and do a search on that would be faster. Doing normal web queries and adding a "sleep for five seconds for no reason" would be faster. *grumble*

Although I hope they don't blow all the Prop Q money on it. I've really liked a lot of the books that have that "paid for by Q" label.
