There were never any "good old days" — they are today, they are tomorrow
nice to be able to cook again

Cat with pumpkin beer
In the aftermath of my foot injury, I really missed cooking. It's been satisfying to get back in the kitchen again.

Dinner tonight was leftover dal, tortillas (since I haven't yet tried making chapatis), and pattypan thiyal, a Keralan dish of zucchini cooked with onions, coconut, and tamarind. Very tasty, although as usual I had to boost the tamarind by about 4x from what the recipe called for.

The recipe's definitely a keeper, although only when the monkey isn't around — as far as he's concerned, tamarind is pure evil. (As opposed to pickles, which are cucumbers soaked in evil.)

Ooh, I love those. The Mexican grocery closest to our apartment has those as lollipops — a lump of tamarind (seeds included), molded around a stick, then rolled in chile powder.

So good!

Plus entertainment value from seeing how far one can spit the seeds. Gotta love it.

It puts me in mind of something Doc said that her students in Texas used to do: they'd buy one of those jumbo sour pickles you find in corner convenience stores -- sometimes in a jar and sometimes in an individual sealed bag -- and a cigar-thick long peppermint stick, run the stick up through the pickle and enjoy!

That one I figure you have to taste to appreciate.

I like the tamarind/spice candy, though I could not eat it at the rate the kiddos did!
